RIDE:

Flight of the Hummingbirds

western Colorado

Not all Wide Open Rides feature traditional road trips or typical travelogues. In fact, this story profiles a family from the smallest of world travelers who sometimes road trip 2,000 miles twice a year during migration. Found only in the Americas, hummingbirds live from Alaska to Chile. During the pandemic, it was pure joy when a mother hummingbird built a nest over my elderly mom’s patio garden. For several weeks we watched her tirelessly rear her twins, getting them ready for the challenges of a crazy planet. This story chronicles the family’s journey and includes some interesting facts about the feisty hummingbird: a small but mighty flying force.
